What to Do When an Accident Occurs

No one wants to have an auto accident, but they do happen. Be prepared by printing out these reminders and the Accident Form to keep in your glove compartment along with your auto insurance ID card.

Accident Checklist

- Call the police. Documentation is very important and a police report may be one of the documents your insurance will require (depending on the accident). However, be aware that in many states, police may not be required to assist in a non-injury accident or for accidents on private property such as a shopping center garage. In addition, for certain types of accidents, the police may not send out a unit to the scene. If this is the case, you can go to the nearest police department and file a report.

- Ask to see the other driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Make note of the name, address, phone number, driver's license number, year, make, model and license plate number of the other car. Also, be sure to verify the driver's address and phone number since the license may not have the most current information. If the driver is not the registered owner, be sure you get the insurance information for the registered owner.

- Don't discuss the fault or blame at the scene of the accident. Ask if everybody is okay at the beginning and then end the discussion.

- Get names and phone numbers of any witnesses.

- Contact your insurance company as soon as possible.

- Keep a Polaroid or "one use" camera in the car. You can use it to take pictures of your car and any other vehicles involved in the accident.

- Keep all maintenance and repair records for your car as evidence of its condition prior to the accident.
